Over the years, John has perfected his secret formula, with just the right mix of cider, cinnamon and other ingredients. John Henry, our bakery manager and donut expert, has been keeping our bakery humming for over 25 years, often starting up the ovens and donut machines before dawn. Customers sometimes have to wait in line when we run low, but they don’t seem to mind! We also have five convection ovens that turn out pies, cookies, muffins, and other delicacies (see list below). Now we have five donut machines, and on super busy days such as fall weekends and Halloween the machines (and our staff) work all day long. Doug’s cider donuts were soon the most popular item at the Roadstand, and the bakery had to be expanded to keep up with demand. The exact formula we use, though, is a well-kept secret.īack in 1988, Douglas Grout started the bakery with just one donut machine and one mixer. Apple cider gives donuts a rich, tangy sweetness and a light and fluffy texture. Probably it’s the cider we press from our own apples, in our pressing room just behind the bakery.
